One thing I would have done more often during my time in Portugal. I definitely would more often rent a car with all some of my friends and drive around portugal. Because renting a car is quite cheap and if you don't use the highway you can go cheap to some of the very beautiful spots around Portugal.

Guimaraes is known as the city where Portugal was born. King Alfons I. and his Stepmother got into a fight and after that he declared Portugal as a state and made Guimaraes to its first capital. The history can be seen in the castle of guimaraes, what is up on a hill and really worth it to go from the center. After arriving to Guimaraes and having a really nice lunch in HISTORICO BY PAPABOA we walked up the streets through the old city and reached the castle 30 min later. After the sightseeing we went back to the PRACA DE SANTIAGO to drink a beer in the sun. It's a big square in the old city where all the habitants and students go to have a break and enjoying the goodlife.

On the way back we passed the most worthful heritage of the city, the Alpendre in front of the IGREJA DE NOSSA SENHORA DA OLIVEIRA. There is written that Guimaraes's old center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and makes it also to a pilgrim destiny for tourists. Nevertheless I would recommend to go there if possible.
