ALMEIDA GARRETT HIGH SCHOOL in Vila Gaia

A mind that is streched by a new experience can never go back to it’s old dimensions

Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr.

In the morning around 7.30am I tried with all possible effort to turn off the alarm. But my mission was clear for that day: motivate portugues pupils to leave the comfort zone and to go abroad one day.

So I arrived in the highschool in Vila Gaia, without knowing what will come next. Pedro picked me up at the metro station and then we entered the highschool together. Two english-teacher introduced themselves and after a short talk we started to interact with our audience, consisting of two 10th grad classes.

After Pedro performed passionately his speech about the Erasmus program including its’ benefits and his own experiences, it was my turn to amaze the audience. I started with a presentation of my own country - Germany - and moved on to the reasons for the decision for portugal as my Erasmus destiny. The most important message the kids should remember while growing-up:

Try to leave your comfort zone and remember that you even get paid for it.

(supported by the Erasmus Program)

After two presentations during the morning I was trying to recognize the differences and gaps between the school systems I know. I noticed one good and one bad thing:

+ kids have to put their mobilephones into a shelf on the teachers desk before classes

- kids and students mainly get unhealthy food offered apart from apples and bananas

I'm really grateful to have this opportunity and to talk to the portuguese kids. The award for my time were happy faces and several boxes of sardines, made of chocolate.

compare food for pupils and students...
